How to use playback speed calculator
Enter the original media length and the playback multiplier. The result is the time you will spend listening or watching, assuming continuous playback without pauses.
- Enter the original recording length as H:MM or H:MM:SS. For example, 0:30:00 means thirty minutes.
- Choose a speed preset or enter the multiplier used by your player. 1× is normal speed; 1.5× is one and a half times normal speed.
- Read the playback duration and the time saved or added compared with normal playback. Copy the result or share the editable inputs.
How the calculation works
Playback duration = original duration ÷ speed; time saved = original duration − playback duration
Playback speed scales the recording’s duration inversely. When the speed is below 1×, the result shows the extra time instead of a negative saving. The estimate assumes continuous playback. Pauses, advertisements, seeking, and other interruptions are not included.
Worked examples
An eight-hour audiobook at 1.25×
8 hours ÷ 1.25 = 6.4 hours, or 6 hours 24 minutes. Compared with normal playback, that saves 1 hour 36 minutes. Decimal hours use fractions of an hour: 0.4 hours is 24 minutes.
A ninety-minute lecture at 1.5×
90 minutes ÷ 1.5 = 60 minutes, saving 30 minutes. At 0.75×, the same lecture takes 120 minutes, adding 30 minutes.
| Speed | Duration (H:MM:SS) | Saved or added |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75× | 1:20:00 | 20 minutes extra |
| 1× | 1:00:00 | 0 minutes saved |
| 1.25× | 0:48:00 | 12 minutes saved |
| 1.5× | 0:40:00 | 20 minutes saved |
| 2× | 0:30:00 | 30 minutes saved |
What the result means
Duration is divided by speed. Seeking, ads, and pauses are not included.
Common questions
How long does a one-hour video take at 1.5×?
It takes 40 minutes and saves 20 minutes, assuming uninterrupted playback. Divide 60 by 1.5 to get 40; subtract 40 from the original 60 to get the saving.
Does 1.5× speed save 50% of the time?
1.5× means playback is 50% faster, but the duration is divided by 1.5. You spend two-thirds of the original time, saving one-third, or about 33.3%. At 2× speed, the duration is halved.
Can I calculate the remaining audiobook or playlist time?
Enter the remaining duration instead of the full recording length. For several items, total their lengths with Sum durations first, then use that total here. Add your own allowance for breaks or other interruptions.
